New Delhi : Improving the financial health of state electricity boards (SEBs) will be crucial to adding generation capacity in tandem with the country’s fast-growing electricity demand, Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia said Wednesday.
He was briefing mediapersons on the deliberations in the meeting of the National Development Council (NDC) to approve the central government’s 11th Five-Year Plan (2007-2012) document.
Ahluwalia also sounded optimistic about the government achieving the 11th Plan target for power generation capacity addition.
“When the 10th Plan began, there were few power generation projects where orders had been placed by developers for execution. That led to a huge shortfall in the capacity target.
“But in the current Plan, out of the 78,000 MW of the targeted capacity addition, there is capacity worth 52,000 MW already under construction,” he said.
