“The BJYM wants a new admission policy for students. We demand that students from Delhi should get at least four percent relaxation in cut off-marks for Delhi University admissions,” said Vijay Goel, Delhi BJP president.

The Delhi BJP accused the Delhi Congress government of lacking the will to implement such a rule even though they could do so immediately in government-run colleges.

“I am going to take up this issue with the newly-appointed lieutenant governor of Delhi whom I will meet Monday,” Goel added.

To protest the denial of opportunity and putting forward the demand, a large number of students gathered at Jantar Mantar in the capital Saturday.

“Students who come from lower- and middle-income groups can not afford to study in private colleges. Their only hope is to study in a Delhi University college, but with acute shortage of seats, they lose out on the chance to have higher education,” said Gaurav Khari, president of Delhi BJYM.

BJYM also suggested opening 15 new colleges, starting evening classes in morning colleges, and opening branches of prestigious colleges in neighbouring cities and states to reduce pressure of students from other states on Delhi University.

According to BJYM, over 1.3 lakh students passed out of Delhi schools each year, but only 10,000 get admission in Delhi University colleges.
