Washington: Former US Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. was sentenced to 30 months in prison Wednesday for illegal spending of campaign funds.
Jackson, a former Democratic Congressman from Illinois and son of US civil rights leader Jesse Jackson Sr., was sentenced after he pleaded guilty to charges related to misusing $750,000 in campaign funds on personal purchase, Xinhua reported.
The former lawmaker expressed remorse, saying that he had “misled” the taxpayers he represented.
“I take responsibility for my actions and am very sorry for what I’ve done,” said Jackson at the hearing.
His wife, Sandi Jackson, was also sentenced Wednesday to one year in prison for falsifying tax returns.
The couple had both pleaded guilty earlier this year to the charges related to the illegal spending of campaign fund and failing to report the campaign money as income. They admitted to living off the campaign funds and buying luxuries.
