Islamabad : Pakistani interior ministry said Friday it was not informed of an Al-Qaeda claim that it had a role in slaying of Pakistani former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.
The Ministry said, however, that the so-called “extremist elements”, who were already behind a chain of attacks this year, could be accountable.
The Ministry raised the statement in reaction to Pakistan’s ARY TV network that reported Al-Qaeda, led by Osama bin Laden, was to blame for Thursday’s assassination.
Interior ministry spokesman Javed Cheema said Islamabad did not had any information on the claim.
Cheema said the likely perpetrators were “the same extremist elements who have been committing acts of terrorism in the country in the past.”
