Chhattisgarh observes shutdown to protest Maoist violence

Raipur: Chhattisgarh witnessed a near-total spontaneous shutdown Friday to protest brutal killings of 15 troopers and a civilian by Maoists in an ambush March 11 in Sukma district of the violence-wracked Bastar region.

The shutdown call was given by the opposition Congress and was supported by several social and trade bodies.

Buses were off the road, petrol pumps were closed and shops were shut down in all the state’s 27 districts. In Bastar region’s seven districts, the shutdown was complete with roads totally deserted.

The shutdown was peaceful.
