New Delhi: Lawyer and activist Shehzad Poonawalla has filed a complaint against BJP UP Incharge Amit Shah for his alleged communal remark to the National Commission for Minorities (NCM).
Through the letter the activist has drawn the attention of the NCM towards what he termed “an extremely reprehensible and offensive set of remarks, violative of various sections of the Indian Penal Code,” made by Amit Shah, General Secretary of the Bharatiya Janta Party, in-charge for Uttar Pradesh for the 2014 Loksabha elections for his “hate-inciting, communal remarks” aimed at polarizing the electorate on religious lines.
On Thursday April 3rd 2014 the offensive remarks, “brimming with vitriol” were made by Amit Shah to members of the Jat community at Raajhar village, 40 km from Muzaffarnagar. With him was BJP legislator Suresh Rana, who is accused of instigating the riots last year.
According media reports, Amit Shah had said: “This election is about voting out the government that protects and gives compensation to those who killed Jats,” adding, “It is about badla (revenge) and protecting izzat (honour).”
The same sentiment of “Apman ka badla- Revenge for violating honour” was again made by Amit Shah on Friday 4th April 2014 to a meeting at a farmhouse in the Muzaffarnagar’s Gandhi Colony.
The Complainant noted, “The above statements, may seem innocuous on being read without context. But the audience and the location at which these remarks have been made, reveal the sinister design of the said leader and party to exploit wounds of the recent communal conflagration in Western Uttar Pradesh, in particular, Muzaffarnagar.”
He pointed out that Muzaffarnagar witnessed riots between Muslims and Jats in August end-September 2013 where several persons were killed and thousands were rendered homeless. The role of BJP leaders in fanning hatred through communal speeches and uploading of fake videos has been well documented and is being investigated.
Moreover, the entire outbreak of violence was hinged on the mobilisation of a community against another on the pretext of “bahu beti bachao” (save the honour of daughters and daughters in laws), he added.
He hence prayed before the NCM to direct the police to register an FIR and also to urge the Election Commission of India to take necessary steps for violation of model of code of conduct.
