New Delhi: Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi on Monday discussed ways to improve the law and order situation in the capital with Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung.
“We discussed the law and order scenario in Delhi and strategies to improve it,” he said, hours before he is set to meet Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
“Police are accountable to the system and not to any individual,” he added, amid recurring demands of Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party government that Delhi Police should report to it, not the central home ministry.
“We adhere by the Gita that is our constitution and various laws which govern policing in Delhi,” Bassi added.
About Delhi government’s criticism of police over law and order, Bassi said: “I take criticism in a positive spirit, even if it is wrong.”
On Sunday, Kejriwal requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to hand over Delhi Police to his government if he could not devote one hour every week to discuss law and order issues in the city.
The brutal murder of a teenager in the capital’s Anand Parbat area has again made the AAP government take up the issue of policing in Delhi. The Delhi government says it must have control over Delhi Police.
