Lucknow : Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has asked the construction giant J.P. Associates – awarded the contract for the Rs.400 billion ($10 billion) Ganga Expressway – to implement job reservation while executing the project.

“J.P. Associates has been told to allocate 10 percent of its jobs on the Ganga Expressway project to the Scheduled Castes, 10 percent to other backward castes (OBCs) and another 10 percent to the economically poor among the upper castes,” Mayawati told reporters here Friday.

While it is not clear how much employment the proposed four-year project would generate, officials were of the view that the mega construction activity would involve several thousand employees.

With Mayawati insisting on her quota formula, this would be the first instance of a private sector company implementing job reservation.

In August last year, the chief minister had declared that all new private sector companies seeking government concessions or special privileges to set up new ventures in the state would have to abide by her reservation formula.

“This is in fulfilment of my clear-cut stand on introducing reservations in the private sector too”, Mayawati asserted. “Those failing to fulfil the quota would not be entitled to any concessions or privileges,” she added.
