Director General Avelino Razon, national police chief, said the suspect admitted during interrogation that he was among Abu Sayyaf rebels who beheaded and mutilated 10 marines killed in a clash in Basilan province in July last year.

The beheadings prompted a massive military offensive against Abu Sayyaf rebels in Basilan and the nearby island of Jolo.

Razon said police arrested Sulayman, who carries a $12,345 (500,000-peso) reward for his capture, based on an arrest warrant issued by a local court for the killings.

The Abu Sayyaf is the smallest but most violent Islamic rebel group in the southern Philippines. It has been blamed for several deadly terrorist attacks in the country.
