Gaza : Hamas (Islamic Resistance Movement) has agreed on a conditional return of European Union observers to the Rafah crossing, after three days of talks with Egyptian authorities.

Despite reservations about a 2005 agreement, calling for international observers in the area, Hamas agreed on their presence, but made clear that they must be residents of Palestinian territories or Egypt.

These remarks were made by Hamas negotiator Mohamed Nasser, who explained that their delegation will return today from Cairo, where they held negotiations with the PA (Palestinian National Authority).

Palestinian leaders failed to reach a final agreement on the control of the crossing. However, they agreed on its re-opening to allow passage between the Gaza Strip and the neighboring country and make viable the entry of basic supplies to the impoverished area.

The Rafah crossing was unilaterally closed by Israel in June when Hamas assumed control of Gaza. EU observers immediately abandoned their mission then.
