Kampala (Uganda) : Five people were killed and about 200 injured in an earthquake that struck eastern Democratic Republic of Congo Sunday, the United Nations said Tuesday.
The quake that shook the South Kivu province with a magnitude of 6.1 on the Richter scale had its epicentre 20 km north of the region’s capital Bukavu.
Successive aftershocks were felt a day after the quake Monday, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Activities (OCHA) said in a press release.
By Tuesday, 80 percent of the injured had been discharged from hospitals, the agency said.
The quake resulted in the collapse of 99 buildings in Bakuva and 815 buildings were rendered uninhabitable due to serious damages and fissures, OCHA said.
