United Nations : The United Nations has called for continued support from the international community to help it stabilize situation in Africa and eradicate poverty there and said great progress has been made in the continent.
Deputy Secretary General Asha-Rose Migiro said Africa is presented to the world as an area of conflict and poverty, though violence has dropped in the last ten years.
The UN official admitted that Africa is still facing challenges in the promotion of human rights and law, as well as in the Goals of the Millennium, which establish a series of objectives to end extreme poverty and malnourishment by 2015.
Another challenge, she added, is violence that continues causing tragic consequences for civilians in the remaining wars, and noted that the Darfur conflict is a very clear tragedy.
Migiro's speech at the committee on African affairs of the New York Lawyers Association referred to the successes in consolidation of peace in many African regions.
