Crimes, accidents claim 60 lives during Ecuador’s carnival

Quito : More than 60 people have been killed and some 160 injured in incidents of crimes and accidents in the last four days of Ecuador’s Carnival celebrations, the police have said.

According to a police report, at least 36 people died in traffic accidents while 17 were murdered, seven drowned and two committed suicide during the carnival which ended Tuesday, Spain’s EFE news agency reported Thursday.

At least 160 people have been injured in several road accidents, two in robberies and three in street fights, the report said.

Some 16,381 police officers were deployed across the Andean nation during Carnival to help in maintaining law and order situation and deal with emergencies.

The police have arrested a total of 1,167 people, including 71 minors from across the country for different crimes.

In these four days, the police have recorded complaints of 73 muggings, 39 house robberies, five highway robberies, 1,210 disturbances and 250 cases of domestic violence, the report said.
