Rio De Janeiro : At least 10 people died and another seven are still missing after a ferry carrying over 100 passengers sank in the Amazon river, Brazilian officials said.
The Almirante Monteiro collided with a barge carrying fuel tanks early on Thursday near the northwest Brazilian town Itacoatiara, in the state of Amazonas.
Most of the victims were trapped in their cabins as the ferry capsized. A total of 92 people have been rescued. Four of the dead were children.
Over 70 rescuers, a helicopter and a navy vessel were involved in the operation. The search for the survivors is continuing. Local officials said the death toll could rise.
