UNHCR deputy commissioner in Iran to discuss refugee issues

Tehran : United Nations Assistant High Commissioner for Refugees Mrs Erika Feller is on a four-day visit to Iran from February 23-27.

According to UNHCR office in Tehran, the first leg of her trip is Zahedan, beginning with Shirabad area, where “she will hear refugee’s voices and assess their needs and will visit a community based project. This is jointly managed by BAFIA/UNHCR.”
“After her visit Mrs Feller will meet the Afghan representatives.

“On her way back she will fly to Mashhad where she will also meet with refugee representatives.

“Upon return from Mashhad she will visit Semnan and Soleymankhnai camps.

“During her stay, she will meet with senior Iranian and Afghan officials as well as Afghan and Iraqi refugee representatives.

“They will address the problems and concerns of the refugee communities in exile. These would include issues such as housing, employment, security, health and education.

“On Saturday Ms Feller was scheduled to meet the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Manouchehr Mottaki, in order to discuss further cooperation on the plight of Afghan and Iraqi refugees in Iran.

“In addition she will also meet deputy Minister of Interior for international affairs and other authorities in Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“Mrs Feller will give a press conference in which she will reply to media questions, regarding Afghan and Iraqi refugees in Iran and the situation of refugees and UNHCR activities in general,” the Tehran office said.
