Tikrit, Iraq : A suicide bomber on a wheelchair blew himself up at an army headquarters in a city in Salahudin province on Monday, killing three officers, including a senior officer, and wounding eight soldiers, a provincial police source said.
“Brigadier Abdul-Jabbar Rabie al-Safi, deputy commander of the Samarra City, some 120 km north of Baghdad, was killed when a suicide bomber wearing an explosive vest and sitting on a wheelchair blew himself up near him,” the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
Earlier, the source said Safi alone was killed during the incident.
Safi was receiving residents of Samarra City to hear their grievances on his Monday weekly meeting with the people when the apparently disabled suicide bomber approached him and detonated himself in the reception hall of the military headquarters, according to the source.
The blast totally destroyed the reception hall and killed two more officers and wounded eight soldiers who were at the scene, the source said later.
Insurgents frequently attack Iraqi security forces, accusing them of collaborating with the U.S. occupation.
