Bhopal : The Madhya Pradesh police Thursday registered a case against Sandeep Patel, son of Revenue Minister Kamal Patel, and few others for firing shots at an opposition party leader.
Harda district Congress leader Rajendra Patel in his complaint said: “Sandeep came with his friends late Wednesday night to my home and asked me to withdraw corruption charges against his father. When I refused, he fired several rounds from his Mauser but fortunately none of the bullets hit me.”
“The police were reluctant to lodge a complaint but for the demonstration by the Congress workers. The case should be handed over to the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation),” said state Congress spokesman Manak Agarwal.
Another senior Congress leader, Rameshwar Neekhra, said, “Firing by the minister’s son at a witness also amounts to contempt of court and the police should take strict action against the guilty.”
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s state spokesman, Uma Shankar Gupta, however, said action would be taken against whosoever found guilty.
While the Congress alleged that the police were trying to protect the minister’s son, Harda Police Superintendent Akhilesh Jha said: “It is yet to be confirmed whether Sandeep opened fire.”
Jha, however, confirmed that a case of firing has been registered at Harda police station on Congress leader Rajendra Patel’s complaint.
