New Delhi : International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW), the 1985 Nobel prize winners, have called for a new nuclear non-proliferation regime which applies equally to all countries.
Speaking to reporters, Sergey Kolesnikov, head of the Russian delegation to the 18th IPPNW World Congress that concluded Tuesday, said all delegates agreed that a new convention against nuclear weapons should replace the current Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, which is not equally imposed on various nations.
Over 600 delegations from 48 countries took part in the nine-day congress that was inaugurated by the Vice-President Hamid Ansari March 9.
Kolesnikov said that the present nuclear order was not working and a new approach was required to be adopted. Noting that Russia wanted a “nuclear free world,” he said that IPPNW would be asking US to disarm its nuclear warheads.
At the valedictory session of the congress Tuesday, Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss warned that even if the states decided against the use of nuclear weapons, there is a “serious danger” of these weapons falling in the hands of terrorists and other non-state actors.
“However, the global race for nuclear militarization has forced countries with limited resources to think and act for preparedness and response,” he said.
