New Delhi : With Minister for Commerce and Industry Kamal Nath and ex chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir Farooq Abdullah seated in the front row during Rina Dhaka’s show, the Wills lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) Saturday saw an unusual rendezvous of politics and fashion.
“I am not so fashionable but it was a very good show. The designs were nice and I am sure it would be popular with youngsters,” Abdullah told IANS.
Sticking to her signature style of accentuating the curves of the female body, Dhaka’s autumn-winter line offered an androgynous palette with outfits in sheer fabrics, contrary to her previous collection that romanced with colours.
“I have always been experimental and this time I have used lots of grey, mossy and dark colours for my line, as I was inspired by a picture of moss on stones,” Dhaka told IANS.
However, the style guru hasn’t named her collection yet.
“I forgot to name it! But it draws inspiration from lines and one would find lots of random and geometric lines.”
The collection offers a medley of outfits ranging from traditional saris to long gossamer tube tops, kurtas, kaftan tops teamed with straight-fit jeans or slacks and short woollen jackets with capes or cowls replacing dupattas and scarves.
The hemlines of kurtas in shades of light brown and moss green have inverted box pleats of contrasting and bright colours. There were also dresses of varied styles and designs, quilted jackets and a grey sari with small floral patterns.
“Each outfit of my collection tells a story about moss on the stone,” she said.
The outfits have been embellished very subtly with kantha, dabka, zardozi embroidery, kundan work, sequin work and latticework.
“The kundan work was used to signify the sort of shimmer that moss on stone would exude when the sunrays fall on it.”
“There are small floral and big ‘kalgi’ motifs but all three-dimensional,” Dhaka said.
Fabrics like cashmere wool mixed with angora wool, georgettes, tussar silk, ahimsa silk and crepe have been used to create the line.
