According to the police, members of the Peasant Encounter Organisation took hostage the tourists near Dulce River, some 250 km northeast of Guatemala City.

Guayacan Tours, the company that organised the trip, said the captives were two couples from the Belgian city of Ghent. A guide from the company and a local boat operator were also taken hostage along with the tourists.

In February, members of Peasant Encounter took 29 police officers hostage for 33 hours in the Caribbean town of Livingston, to press their demand for release of one of their members, Ramiro Choc, who was arrested Feb 14.
