Islamabad : Election for speaker and deputy speaker of Pakistan’s new National Assembly will be held Wednesday, Speaker of the outgoing house Chaudhry Amir Hussain said Monday.
The National Assembly will meet at 11 a.m. (0600GMT) to elect the two officers of the house, the News Network International (NNI) news agency reported.
Candidates will file nomination papers till 12 noon (0700GMT) Tuesday.
Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid and its allies have announced Israr Tareen as their candidate for speaker, said the report.
Sources said that the Pakistan Peoples Party and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, which are expected to form a coalition government, are likely to field Fahmeeda Mirza and Faisal Karim Kundi as candidates for speaker and deputy speaker respectively.
The sitting speaker would conduct the election for the new speaker and administer oath of office to the new speaker, who would then conduct the election for the office of deputy speaker and administer the oath to him.
The maiden session of the new National Assembly was held here Monday and members took oath.
