Paris : France has expressed here its “concern” over the postponement of the presidential election for the 17th time and that it regrets that Lebanon will not be represented by a president in the upcoming Arab Summit due in Damascus on March 29-30.
The French Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it is aware of Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri’s announcement of postponing the presidential election session for the 17th time, expressing its “concern” for this action.
The postponement of the parliamentary session was announced by Berri from March 25 to April 22, which indicated that there will not be a Lebanese president at the Arab Summit.
Lebanon has been without a president since last November when Emile Lahud’s presidential term ended.
The statement added that France recalls the support it offered along with the EU for the plan unanimously adopted by the Arab League members to immediately hold the presidential elections.
The Arab peace plan, which consists of three points, calls for the immediate election of a president, followed by the formation of a national unity government based on the constitution and to be then followed by a new electoral law.
