Nashik (Maharashtra) : Eminent Dalit litterateur Baburao Bagul died in a private hospital here Wednesday following a brief illness. He was 77.
Born in a poor Dalit family in Vihitgaon village in the district, Baburao could get education only up to Class 10. He made a living first working as a marker in a laundry and then as a low- rung employee in the Indian Railways.
He came into limelight with his first book “Jevha Mi Jaat Sodli” (When I Abjured Caste) and the subsequent one “Maran Swasta Hotay” (Death Is Getting Cheaper). Bagul handled major literary genres like short stories, fiction and biography, apart from writing social critiques.
He was associated with several progressive movements and was once elected president of an all India Dalit literary meet.
