New Delhi : The Samajwadi Party (SP) appears to be making overtures towards the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) in the run up to the Karnataka assembly elections.

The buzz that the two parties could reach an electoral understanding intensified when SP general secretary Amar Singh called on former prime minister and JD-S president H.D. Deve Gowda Thursday afternoon, party insiders said.

“The SP may not be a very widely known in Karnataka but it is led in the state by former chief minister and veteran leader S. Bangarappa who commands considerable clout among the Idiga community,” conceded a JD-S leader.

However, Deve Gowda was reticent.

“The problem is we set in motion our electoral preparations in January. By now we have decided most of our candidates. It is very difficult.”

In the last general elections, Bangarappa was with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) but later joined the SP.
