India assures China of successful passage of Olympic Torch

New Delhi : India has assured China that it would take all necessary measures to ensure successful passage of the Olympic Torch.

In a call yesterday between India’s External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi Wednesday, Mukherjee conveyed that the Indian Government will take the necessary measures to ensure that the passage of the Olympic Torch is a success, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson said in a statement here Thursday.

Mukherjee also reiterated India’s position that the Tibet Autonomous Region is part of the territory of the People’s Republic of China.

“The External Affairs Minister conveyed that the Dalai Lama is a religious and spiritual leader.

The government does not allow Tibetans to engage in anti-China political activities in India.

The Chinese Foreign Minister expressed his appreciation for India’s position,” the statement added.

“Mukherjee recalled Prime Minister’s landmark visit to China last January. He also said that he looked forward to working together with the Chinese Foreign Minister to implement the main elements of the document on the Shared Vision between the two countries signed by the two Prime Ministers,” the spokesperson said.
