Kabul : A bungled suicide attack on a NATO convoy in southern Afghanistan left eight civilians dead and another 22 injured, witnesses and officials said on Thursday.
The attacker detonated his explosive-packed car as the NATO convoy passed through the area, police chief of the southern Kandahar province Sayed Aqa Saqib told journalists.
He said all those killed and injured were civilians as the NATO convoy had already passed the centre of the city, where the suicide car bomb attack was carried out.
The number of those killed might go up as most of the injured were rushed to hospital in serious condition, said Abdul Hakeem, an eyewitness who added he had seen some horrific scenes of flames and fire and then smoke as foul smell swept the whole area.
Although there was no claim of responsibility for the suicide attack, the Taliban usually claim such incidents to their credit and report high toll among the foreign and Afghan troops.
The NATO also is still to comment over the blast.
Canadian troops are currently leading the NATO’s counter-insurgency mission in Kandahar, also known as the spiritual capital of the Taliban movement and birthplace of Taliban chief Mullah Omar.
