Lucknow : The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court Thursday asked the Uttar Pradesh government not to violate the Supreme Court’s directive to erect only temporary structures in the Ambedkar memorial park – stated to be Chief Minister Mayawati’s dream project.
The bench comprising Justice D.P. Singh and Justice S.N. Shukla turned down the state government’s plea to put on hold the court proceedings in the wake of the Supreme Court’s intervention in the matter.
The bench was of the view that since the apex court had not stayed the matter, the proceedings here could continue.
It also warned the government to ensure that no construction was carried out at the park other than what had been specifically permitted by the apex court.
Earlier, work on the Rs.5 billion memorial here was stayed by the high court bench on a public interest litigation (PIL) alleging changes in the land use of a large area originally earmarked as green belt in the state capital’s master plan.
The state government, however, chose to file an appeal before the Supreme Court that it must be allowed to make certain construction necessary for celebrating B.R. Ambedkar’s birth anniversary April 14.
The court granted a conditional permission allowing the government only to raise temporary structures required for the birth anniversary celebrations.
The case has been posted for hearing Friday when the state government has been asked to place all records for examination.
