Myanmar ministers meet Indian officials, entrepreneurs

Nay Pyi Taw : Myanmar’s Minister for Energy, Brigadier General Lun Thi held discussions with his Indan counterpart last week on the exploration for oil and gas in Myanmar’s Rakhine offshore field and other areas of co-operation.

Brig-Gen Lun Thi, who had accompanied the Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council, Vice-Senior General Maung Aye, on his visit to India, met Indian Oil and Gas Minister Murli Deora in New Delhi on April 3.

Apart from discussions about oil and gas exploration in the Rakhine field, their talks also included the refinery of Myanma Petrochemical Enterprise and other win-win co-operation between the two countries.

Brig-Gen Lun Thi also had separate talks with the chairmen of Engineers India Ltd, Angelique International Ltd , Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL), Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Gas Authority of India Ltd and Essor Oil Ltd.

Their discussions, which took place on April 2 and 3, covered issues related to oil and gas offshore exploration, conversion of gasoline-fired vehicles into CNG-powered vehicles and petrochemicals.

Similarly, Minister for Electric Power No 1 Col Zaw Min also held talks with the Chairman of India’s Bharat Heavy Electrical Ltd about the production of electric and machine tools and hydraulic steel structures.

The minister also held talks with D.K Mittal, the managing director of Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services Ltd, on co-operation in hydro-electric power projects in the Chindwin River Basin in Myanmar.

Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha and Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Tin Naing Thein attended the meeting between Myanmar entrepreneurs from the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers and Industry (FICCI) and Indian entrepreneurs led by Minister for Commerce Shri Jairam Ramesh and the president of Indian Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), Daya Krishna Goyal, on April 3.

The two parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on economic co-operation between the two countries.
