The attack is the most sophisticated since Israel withdrew from the Palestinian enclave in 2005, Commander of the Israeli Southern Region General Yoav Galant told reporters.

The attacker aimed to kill or kidnap as many Israeli soldiers as possible in order to mar the Passover (Jewish religious holiday on April 24), he noted.

Hamas militants drove two bomb-laden jeeps near Israeli soldiers stationed at the border crossing and detonated them under cover of heavy fog into early Saturday.

Following the attack, which left three militants killed and 13 Israeli soldiers wounded, Israel put its security forces on maximum alert in anticipation of further attacks.

Israel have imposed total blockade on the Palestinian territories since Thursday through April 27.
