“Acting on a tip-off, we raided a house near Ekbalpore area in the western part of Kolkata and arrested six people last night (Wednesday night). We have also seized five mobile phones, a television set and some score sheets,” Kolkata Police Deputy Commissioner (port division) Anand Kumar told IANS Thursday.

Kumar said: “After preliminary investigations, it has been revealed that the men were betting on the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) matches. The kingpin of the racket is a man named Karim.”

He said the police are interrogating the bookies to get more information on the modus-operandi of the gang.

Earlier, the Kolkata Police had arrested five men from an apartment in Phoolbagan area in northeastern part of Kolkata Monday for allegedly running an inter-state gambling racket on the IPL matches.

The police had seized Rs.160,000, a television set, recording gear, a computer, mobile phones, a tele-conversation machine and some score-sheets from the apartment.

According to the police, the gang started the betting racket from the very first Twenty20 IPL match in Bangalore April 18. The gang is alleged to have connections in Mumbai and abroad.
