According to a forest department official, the incident took place at around 1 a.m. in a tribal settlement located close to a forest, 60 km from here.

The infant and her mother were attacked even as they left their house after hearing the noise of the approaching elephant herd.

“The infant, Minnu, was with her mother Manjula when they were attacked. After coming out of the house, Manjula accidentally came in front of an elephant. The animal hit her with the trunk and the child was thrown away from her arms. When people came back looking for the child, they found her dead,” Ranjith Kumar, Vazhikkadavu forest range officer, told IANS.

Manjula also suffered injuries in the attack.
