Seoul : Indian golfers made a weak start on the opening day with Amandeep Johl and Rahil Gangjee being the best with two-over 74 each in the first round of the GS Caltex Maekyung Open Thursday. The duo was tied at 51st, and seven shots behind the leader, Korea’s Kang Ji-man (67).
Digvijay Singh was lying 68th with a round of 75 and Gaganjeet Bhullar shot a six-over 78 and was 118th and in likely to miss the cut unless he shoots a low number Friday.
Koreans dominated the field with the top dozen places being occupied by home players.
Kang, who turned professional in 1999, fired seven birdies against two bogeys for a narrow one-stroke lead over amateur Song Tae-hoon who had an impressive start with a 68 in lone second spot at the Nam Seoul Country Club.
Four players shot 69 each and they were Korea’s Lee Jin-won, Kim Kyung Tae, Park Sung-kook and amateur Noh Seung Yeul in a tie for third place.
Japan’s Yoshinobu Tsukada broke the Korean dominance in the leading fray when he recorded a 71 along Mitchell Brown of Australia as they were among those in joint eight position.
Starting on the back nine, the Seoul-based Kang was three under after nine holes before firing three more birdies against a lone dropped shot for the early lead in the $600,000 event.
