Kathmandu : Senior CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury is visiting Nepal for parleys with top political leaders of the country ahead of the formation of a new coalition government expected to be led by the Maoists.
The visit of Yechury, who arrived here today, assumes significance as it comes in a period of political transition in Nepal following the holding of the landmark Constituent Assembly elections on April 10.
Yechury will meet Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, Maoist chief Prachanda, CPN-UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal and other senior political leaders during his tour.
The visit is being seen here as aimed at patching up differences between the Maoists and other major parties including the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML. The Maoist leadership is likely to use Yechury’s good offices to garner support for forming a government led by them, sources said.
The CPI(M) leader had played a key role in bringing the Maoists to the mainstream politics.
After emerging as the single largest party with 220 seats in the 601-member Constituent Assembly, the Maoists have intensified efforts to mobilise national and international support for formation of a new government under the leadership of party chairman Prachanda.
The Maoists do not have a simple majority, neither have they secured the two-third seats required to form a government on their own under the existing constitutional provisions. – NNN-PTI
