New Delhi : A silent protest by MPs of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) against the speaker’s decision to refer some fellow members to the house privileges committee for disorderly conduct led to the adjournment of the Lok Sabha Monday.
The proceedings began with a two-minute silence for Nirmala Deshpande, Rajya Sabha member and noted Gandhian, who died Thursday. Soon after, Ramji Suman of the Samajwadi Party raised the issue of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) targeting north Indians in Maharashtra.
NDA members – most of them from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)- put fingers on their lips to protest against Speaker Somnath Chatterjee’s decision to refer 32 MPs from the BJP, Shiv Sena, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) to the Privileges Committee for making a noise in the house April 24, defying the chair’s pleas to maintain peace.
Following the protest by NDA MPs, the speaker adjourned the House till 2 p.m.
