The ban will be in force between May and September in Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Henan, Shandong, Shanxi, Anhui, Jiangsu and Liaoning – cities that will host the Olympic events, a government directive said and warned violators of penal action.

Chinese farmers often burn crop stalks to clear the fields for the next plantation.

The environment protection ministry will take the help of satellites to enforce the ban across the country, the Beijing News reported Monday.

The Olympic Games will start from Aug 8.
