Dhaka : Bangladesh’s anti-corruption commission (ACC) has pressed charges against former prime minister Khaleda Zia’s son Tarique Rahman, one of her former ministers and six others in a bribery case to hush up the murder of a local entrepreneur.
The anti-graft body said Tuesday that the eight were involved in receiving and giving the bribe to hush up the murder of Humayun Kabir Sabbir, a director of the Basundhara Group.
They worked to ensure that Shafiat Sobhan Sanvir did not have to face charges of killing Sabbir whose body was found outside a building July 5, 2006.
Once a powerful official of Zia’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Tarique Rahman, 40, Zia’s elder son, has been in jail for a year facing extortion and bribery charges.
His younger brother Arafat Rahman, a businessman, has also been in jail.
Zia is herself behind bars since Sept 3, charged with corruption and misuse of office. She was formally charged Tuesday in a case of awarding an oil exploration contract to a Canadian firm.
Among the six is former minister of state for home Lutfozzaman Babar, who was a confidant of Rahman.
The case involves business rivalry and a bribery charge of Taka 210 million (about $3.2 million)
