Siniora, “big loser” in Lebanese power struggle: German daily

By IRNA,

Berlin : The American-backed Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora is the “big loser” in the recent brief military standoff with Lebanon’s Islamic Hizbollah resistance, the junge Welt newspaper said in an analysis on Tuesday.

“The loser of the short but severe power struggle in Lebanon is the government of Fouad Siniora. Ignoring the power constellation can only lead to a new civil war,” the daily added.

It stressed that the new power constellation, exemplified by the weakness of Siniora and the enormous strength of Hizbollah, required new decisions by domestic and foreign actors.

The paper branded “Hizbollah a child of Lebanon”, created as a result of the incapability of numerous Lebanese governments to protect the Arab country against Israeli attacks and occupation.

“That’s why Hizbollah has explicitly insisted and is still insisting on its military independence. Never again, should Lebanon fall into the hands of Israel or other foreign powers …,” it added.

The daily pointed out that Hizbollah acted also wisely by announcing a swift withdrawal from western Beirut following its quick victory against the Siniora militia.
