London : UK anti-war campaigners were Sunday drawing up plans to stage a demonstration against US President George W Bush when he visits Britain next month as part of a visit to several European countries, they said.
The “Stop The War Coalition” have criticised the visit, in mid-June, and predicted that a large number of people would want to take part in protests.
A spokesman for the group said “We’re sure that everyone who has opposed Bush’s war policies and the slavish support he has received from the British Government will want to make their voice heard when the American President visits the UK”.
“Stop the War Coalition” will of course aim to organise the largest possible protest against Bush’s visit”, he said.
The anti-war group added that a visit from Bush was “surely the last thing” British Prime Minister Gordon Brown needed following the Labour Partys defeat in local council elections earlier this month and the Crewe and Nantwich by-election in northern England, last week.
The American President’s UK visit in 2003 sparked one of the biggest ever midweek demonstrations in London.
