New Delhi : Political leaders Tuesday paid tributes to India’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru on his 44th death anniversary with Vice President Hamid Ansari and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi among a large group of leaders paying homage at his memorial here.
Ansari and Gandhi paid floral tributes at Shanti Van, Nehru’s memorial. Cabinet ministers Shivraj Patil and Murli Deora and senior Congress leader Motial Vora were among those who paid homage at the memorial.
Minister of State for Urban Development Ajay Maken accompanied Gandhi at Shanti Van.
An all-religion prayer was conducted at the memorial on the occasion.
Nehru, a towering figure in India’s freedom struggle, became the country’s prime minister on its independence Aug 15, 1947. He died May 27, 1964.
