Equities markets open in the green

Mumbai : The Indian equities markets opened in the green Friday, thanks to a strong show by global markets. There was sustained buying in the capital goods, metal and consumer durables sectors, which boosted the markets in early trade.

The 30-share benchmark index of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), the Sensex, opened with a gain of 137.77 points at 16,454.03. Twenty minutes into trading, it had reached 16,493.70, up 177.44 points from its closing figure Thursday.

At the same time the S&P Nifty index of the National Stock Exchange was at 4879.85 points, up 44.55 points from its previous close.

The market breadth was positive. In initial trade at BSE, 994 scrips advanced, 425 declined and 31 remained unchanged.

Other major Asian markets were trading higher.

Larsen and Toubro, Bharti Airtel and BHEL were among the gainers while Wipro, Satyam and ICICI Bank were among the losers in initial trade.
