Mumbai : The Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-Bombay) is chalking out plans to celebrate its golden jubilee later this year in a big way and various events spanning over a year are being planned.
The celebrations will start Sep 5 – that coincides with the Teachers' Day celebrations in the country – and would culminate March 10, 2009.
"The IIT-Bombay's golden jubilee opportunity would be used to launch new initiatives, celebrate successes of past years and reflect on the past and plan for future," said an official of the country's premier engineering institute.
The foundation day would be celebrated March 10, 2008 and the institute's golden jubilee celebrations committee is planning to invite Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to attend the event, where a book on IIT-Bombay's 50-year journey would be released.
For the 2008 convocation, the president would be invited.
The concluding event would be celebrated March 10, 2009, when a vision document would be released.
From Jan 14-18, 2008, a vice-chancellor's conclave would be held and vice-chancellors, presidents, directors from across the globe with connection to the premier institute would be invited.
Talks by outstanding speakers in the Golden Jubilee Lecture series will be organised. Nobel laureates will be invited to deliver technical and popular lectures and interact with the faculty and students.
International conferences on different subjects like snow, ice, glacier and avalanches; physics of semiconductor devices; renewable energy and conservation; science and engineering education in India and polymer processing will be organised from November 2007 to March 2009, an announcement from the IIT-Bombay said.
A photo souvenir and a film on the institute will be released as part of the golden jubilee celebrations. Besides, there is a proposal to release a special postal cover on the occasion.
The IIT-Bombay campus is located at Powai, a suburb in northwest Mumbai, between the Vihar and Powai lakes. Due to its proximity to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, the campus is clean, green and mostly pollution-free.
Apart from Mumbai, IIT has campuses in Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur (near Kolkata), Chennai, Roorkee and Guwahati.
