Sydney : A 22-year-old Indian student was Friday attacked, drugged and robbed while waiting for a bus in Melbourne.
Melbourne police are appealing for witnesses after the Indian student, identified only as Sam, was attacked, anaesthetised and robbed, while waiting for a bus at the corner of St Kilda Road and Barkley Street in the suburb of St Kilda at about 6.30 a.m.
Sam, who has lived in Melbourne for the past 18 months, was on his way to an exam at La Trobe University, where he is doing a masters degree in finance.
Detective Senior Constable Mark Sontag said it is believed that someone approached Sam from behind and put something over his head that led to him losing his consciousness.
“It’s extremely unusual, I’ve never seen this method used before in the execution of an armed robbery,” Sontag said.
The next thing Sam remembers is waking up and finding his mobile phone and wallet missing. The wallet had cash and cards.
Sam told reporters that he remembered smelling something and being very scared. “I gave up and thought maybe I’m going to die. I was really shocked and scared … and unthinkable because I have to go to university early in the morning and late at night so I’m really scared now.”
