A high-powered committee set up for this purpose when the DMK came to power in May 2006 has decided to call for international bidding in August and to finalise the supplier by September, an official press release said.

The M. Karunanidhi government has allocated Rs.7.50 billion for the fist two phases of the scheme. Each TV set is reportedly being procured at a cost of about Rs.4,000.

The release Monday also said that 2.5 million sets procured under the second phase will be distributed by November 2007.
