Srinagar : The Bemina bridge, Kashmir’s longest, was inaugurated here Saturday by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad 18 years after the project was launched.
Work on the 284-metre long bridge which started in early 1990s had once been abandoned midway causing great inconvenience to thousands of people living on the either side of the Bemina flood spill channel, especially during rains and floods.
However, the chief minister who visited the spot last year pushed for completion of the bridge, bringing much needed relief to the people in the area.
Azad told mediapersons that the completion of the Bemina bridge was pending for long.
“When it was brought to my notice I visited the spot for stocktaking and found that a vast population was subjected to inconvenience and hardship due to the prolonged delay in the completion of the bridge. I then asked the project executing agency to complete the project within 11 months.”
The bridge was completed in 18 years at a cost of Rs.100 million.
