A Faizabad court Saturday sentenced Baghel of Vrindavan to five years imprisonment for attempting to blow up Babri Masjid in Ayodhya using dynamite in 1990 – two years ahead of the actual demolition of the disputed structure allegedly by Hindu mobs.

Police said Baghel got emotionally charged in the wake of the then raging movement by the Sangh Parivar to capture Babri Masjid — claimed to be the site of the birth of Lord Rama.

Baghel wanted to blow up the structure using dynamite but was arrested Dec 9, 1990 before he could implement his plan.
