Cuban Medical Team back from China

Havana : The Cuban medical brigade of the Henry Reeve International Contingent, returned home, after several weeks of intensive work attending victims of the earthquake that devastated China.

The island”s Public Health Minister Jose Ramon Balaguer highlighted in the Monday welcoming ceremony the work carried out by the members.

The brigade, comprised of 36 experts in surgery, orthopedics, intensive medicine, laboratory, radiology and physiotherapists, worked in the hospital of Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province, where the tremor took place.

Nearly 1,000 patients, victims of the largest natural disaster occurred in this country in recent years, were assisted by Cuban experts in their over two-week stay.

Jose Rodriguez, surgeon-physician and chief of the group, said that this is the first time that physicians from the island have worked in a health center of this kind, with highly qualified staff and top technology.

Rodriguez stated that Chinese health authorities have carried out intensive work to face the dangerous situation as a result of the 8 degree Richter scale earthquake.

The September 12 event has killed 69,000 so far with 17,000 missing.
