Tehran : Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Thursday the latest Western “threats” would not break the will of Iran nation to continue its nuclear work, state television network IRIB reported.
Ahmadinejad was referring to a plan by the United States and the European Union to freeze the assets of the Iranian Melli (National) bank, the major bank in Iran both for local and foreign transfers.
Speaking during a meeting with clerical circles in Qom, central Iran, Ahmadinejad said that Iran’s Foreign Ministry was based on principle and Islamic values, and Western threats in the nuclear dispute would therefore not break the nation’s will.
He said the world powers would fall apart like “dominos” and that Iran’s point of view “was finding more and more attention in world forums.”
Tehran has termed the new sanction plans against Iran illegal, and reiterated that Iran would not suspend its uranium enrichment programme.
The EU in Luxembourg, however, said no decision has yet been taken on new sanctions on Iran. The bloc is waiting for Tehran’s response to the new incentive package presented to Iran on Saturday by EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana in Tehran.
Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said Thursday during a visit to Uganda that Tehran was ready to negotiate the package but also said Iran would insist on realizing its nuclear rights in line with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
