London : Indian cricketers from the world-beating 1983 squad relived moments from their historic win Wednesday at the cricket ground where it all happened – the Lord’s in London – and hoped for a repeat.
“We’d like to see the next World Cup back. We should win it. The team looks very good, they’re playing well, they can do it,” said Kapil Dev, skipper of the 1983 team.
“We can repeat the success. We are developing into a very good one-day side,” said Sunil Gavaskar. “I’m hoping we can do it in 2011.”
“One thing was that we had many all rounder’s at the time, which means Kapil had many options,” he added.
The event, dreamed up by Gavaskar, was sponsored by Indian billionaire Vijay Mallya’s United Breweries group.
Among the invitees at a dinner at Lord’s Long Room were members of the 1983 squad, their wives, a large number of Indian-origin businessmen, the Indian high commissioner, BCCI president Sharad Pawar and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah.
