Kolkata : The women’s reservation bill is likely to be passed in the coming monsoon session of parliament, E.M. Sudarsana Natchiappan, chairman of a parliamentary standing committee, said here Thursday.
“We are making all efforts to pass the bill in the monsoon session of parliament itself. Later there will be ample scope for amendments and introducing additional clauses,” Natchiappan, chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on personnel, public grievances, law and justice, told reporters.
“Majority of the political parties and other organisations has supported the bill. Political parties like PMK, Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Janata Dal-United (JD-U) have also demanded sub-quotas for OBCs (other backward classes) and minorities,” he said
The committee held parleys with the West Bengal government Tuesday and Wednesday on the bill.
“We have got positive reactions from all. Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee Wednesday also stressed the need for the reservation,” he said.
Elected representatives of various women’s organizations from West Bengal, Assam and Tripura also spoke in support of the bill at the press meet.
