11 killed in fighting between Filipino left-wing rebels and gov’t forces

Manila : Nine suspected members of the left-wing rebel force New People’s Army (NPA) and two policemen were killed Sunday in an encounter in Claver town in Surigao del Norte, southern Philippines, said local radio dzBB.

The report quoted the Philippine Army’s Eastern Mindanao Command as saying the fighting took place when the suspected NPA rebels met with a regional mobile group of the Philippine National Police, who were conducting combat patrol operations in a village in coordination with the military.

The NPA is a 5,700-strong rebel force engaging government forces in the countryside.
